Surface Preparation
- Before you
start, remove draperies, pictures, mirrors, switch and receptacle
plates and all hardware. Cover all furniture and the floor with
drop cloths. Loosen lighting fixtures or cover with masking tape.
- For properly
prepared surface use the appropriate Primer & Sealer or undercoater
to ensure a premium long lasting paint job.
- Bare Wood:
Fill nail holes, joints and cracks with patching paste. Sand the
surface smooth and clean sanding dust with a damp cloth. Prime bare
or patched areas with a Stain-Blocking Primer & Sealer.
- Plaster
Walls: Must be dry, cured and hard. Textured or swirl types
and soft porous or powdery plaster must be treated with a solution
of one pint household vinegar in one gallon of water. Repeat until
surface is hard. Rinse with plain water and let dry. Apply a Stain-Blocking
Primer & Sealer.
- New Drywall
and Wallboard: All panels joints must be taped and filled prior
to painting. When joint compound and/or patching materials are thoroughly
dry, sand smooth and wipe away dust with a dampened cloth. Prime
with Drywall Primer & Sealer if topcoating with ceiling paint or
a flat or eggshell topcoat.
- Wallpaper
Areas: It is best to use a chemical wallpaper remover or to
rent a steamer to remove wallpaper before painting. Use a chemical
remover to wash off remaining paste and sizing. Rinse well and let
dry before painting. If you choose to paint over wallpaper, it must
be firm and even. Paste down any loose sections and remove all dirt
and grease. Prime with Stain-Blocking Primer & Sealer
- Previously
Painted Surfaces Including Metal: Wash off dirt, grease, soap
and oil build-up with a household detergent. Rinse thoroughly and
remove loose paint. Patch holes and cracks with patching or spackling
compound. Allow to dry and sand smooth. Dull any surface with a
visible gloss or sheen by sanding. Prime with Stain-Blocking Primer
& Sealer.
