Painting Windows

  • Painting Sash Windows: Raise the inside sash, lower the outside. Paint the inside sash, the crossbars and then the frame. Do not paint the top edge of the inside sash. Use that surface to move the sash. Next, paint the outside sash crossbars, then the frame but not the bottom edge.
  • When Paint is Dry: Move both sashes down as far as they will go. Paint the upper part of the check rails. When the paint is thoroughly dry, raise both sashes and paint the lower check rails.
  • Move the Sashes: Back about one inch of their closed positions. Paint the parts of the outside sash that were obstructed, also the top edge of the inside sash. Next, paint the window casing and then the still.
  • Painting Casement Windows: (Windows that open in or out, rather than up and down). Open the windows, paint the top, side, and bottom edges first. Finish with the crossbars, frames, casings and sills.
